Six young people from Watford and Three Rivers successfully completed the Plus One programme which equips them with the life skills needed to help them thrive as young parents. The course was held by YC Hertfordshire at YouthZone in South Oxhey.

The young people showed real commitment, completing the course over 20 weeks and covering four different City & Guilds Units focusing on skills, beginning with a self-assessment programme looking at personal skills and qualities and setting and evaluating short-term goals.

This was followed by units on Parenting Awareness – including first aid and spotting household risks and hazards, managing personal finances and, finally, healthy living – including recognising healthy food types and healthy recipes and lifestyles.

The young people were able to take part in secure in the knowledge that their children were being safely cared for in a dedicated crèche.

All of the young people who took part in the programme successfully completed all parts of the course – and all felt they had benefitted enormously from the programme.

Young mum, Leanne, commented: “Having other young mums to talk to helped me know I’m not the only one who has a hard time every now and again. I've made friends for life”.

Jade said: “Having supportive staff to help me with the work really enabled me to learn properly.”

Elise said: “When I first signed up to Plus One I wasn’t sure I would do the full 6 months but time has flown by, my baby is almost crawling and I’m sad the programme is coming to an end.”
