Positive Alternatives for Broxbourne Young People

20 November 2019

Fifteen young people in Broxbourne participated in the YC Hertfordshire’s Positive Alternatives programme, focusing on making positive choices and keeping themselves safe.

The young people took part in workshops exploring gang culture and the realities of life in a gang including grooming, weapon crime, county lines and exploitation. Young people shared how the sessions had helped them to reflect on their own circumstances, decisions and better understand the steps they can take to keep themselves safe.

The programme also included daily sports activities to promote a healthy lifestyle and boost emotional wellbeing. The group had the opportunity to meet double Olympian and Canoe Slalom World Champion 2019, Fiona Pennie, who gave them an inspirational and motivational talk about the highs and lows of her career. The young people had lots of questions for her about her resilience and after hearing about she dealt with physical and emotional setbacks, they were able to reflect on how they could build their own support network and surround themselves with positive and caring people to help them through personal challenges.

The programme culminated in a white-water rafting evening at Lee Valley White Water Centre where they had to work as a team and face their fears to take on the rapids and successfully complete the course.

One young person aged 14, said: “YC Hertfordshire and the youth workers are great! I have learnt a lot and I’m definitely coming back on Friday!”

Parents said: “He’s really starting to think about decisions he has made in the past and now regrets them.”

“This programme has really helped me understand the risks of knife crime and the effects on yourself and others.”

“We’ve seen a big difference in our son at home, he is more understanding about the impact of his behaviour.”

“I’m so grateful that my son has had the opportunity to do this programme. It’s been fantastic!”
